Migration: successful!

Our edition is now hosted by the Trier Center for Digital Humanities. The corpora have landed softly, the SVN is now operational (thanks to the technical team in Trier!) – in other words: we can get back to work on the edition. Boeckh and Euler are the ones who will be lucky enough to be enriched soon. I am working on finding the necessary funding to wrap up the Chamisso-de la Foye and the Raumer-Tieck correspondences quickly as well. No surprises so far.

But some new features are in the making as well. First of all, the question of the domain name needs to be clarified now that the hosting by the Humboldt University has turned out to be temporary. This was a likely outcome of the project, which is one the reasons why I waited to decide on the URL. The other reason was that we needed enough perspective on the edition and its future to be able to tell what, in the edition’s title, needs to be featured in its URL. If you had asked me the question four years ago, I would logically have answered “Berlin Intellectuals”. Now that our direction, our questions, our cooperations are clearer, it is much more the combination of “letters and texts” and the time “around 1800” that matters. We have had an interesting (but still not fully conclusive) discussion about the way to combine these words in an URL. There will be a follow-up on that!

Also, we want to continue editing corpora to enrich the edition. For some of them, we already have transcriptions, even a first encoding draft. In order for them to be visible as upcoming editorial events, we would like to display scans and metadata ahead of the actual edition (this way, you will know what to be looking forward to, dear reader!). We are discussing the feasibility of this feature. A series of funding applications will be written this summer: I project to edit two major works (one in the field of the history of literature, the other one in the field of the history of classics) and additional correspondences both in French from the Enlightenment period and in German from the Romantic Era. This edition lives on!

One of the great advantages of migrating our edition to Trier is that it is now connected to all the other editions hosted there (Heine, Schlegel, Grimm,…) through a GND BEACON. As soon as I have been able to see what can be done with that new tool in terms of research possibilities, I will write about it here.

My conclusion does not only concern these new developments in themselves, but also the ones who are making it possible. Apart from the technical team in Trier with whom I am in regular contact fine-tuning the migration, it is a great pleasure and honor to keep developing this beautiful endeavor with Anna Busch and Sabine Seifert. I hope to be able to thank them in one way or another someday for all of the thrilling and constructive discussions we have been having over the years. This edition would literally not have been made possible without their tireless input, during the project and well over project time.
